The Chief Innovation Officer (CIVO) is tasked with leading the University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) strategy to catalyze innovation and entrepreneurship in food, agriculture, and natural resources.

The CIVO achieves this through a variety of activities, by serving as a liaison to both public and private sector entities across academia, government, and industry, and creating public-private partnerships with the goal of enhancing University innovation-based economic impact across California.

Key focus areas of the CIVO's program are creating new impacts in food, agriculture, and natural resources through technology, growing the pipeline of young innovators in the food system and working landscapes, and creating new intersections between existing UC ANR programs that create new value for California stakeholders and increase visibility and funding of UC ANR. The CIVO will lead UC ANR's commercialization of technology, creating pathways and programs to formerly stage private and other capital for UC ANR academics engaged in translational research that has the potential to lead to one or more start-up companies. The CIVO will also support efforts to formerly stage private capital managed in direct support of food and agriculture technology sector startups. The CIVO will develop and implement a program to advance entrepreneurship across California in the food and agriculture sector, for both UC startups as well as non-UC entrepreneurs, and provide connections and resources to support growth and scaling. In collaboration with other UC ANR units, will define interactions with government, economic development organizations, and business leaders. The CIVO will define and maintain relationships with both internal and external partners, as well as work with members of the academic community to integrate the programs with the public service mission of the University.
