The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR), a statewide program with local development and delivery, is seeking the following UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Advisor.

Location Headquarters: Quincy, Plumas County, CA

Purpose: The Disaster Resilience & Economic Development Advisor will implement an innovative extension education and applied research program around the intersection of community planning, disaster preparedness, and economic health that will enhance community resilience across the region.

The position will involve:

  • Community planning and infrastructure development following devastating impacts of the recent wildfires as well as increasing preparedness for future disaster events.
  • Enhancing individual, community and regional disaster resilience planning and recovery.
  • Strengthen economic resilience by fostering innovation, a diverse business community, and advance business planning to help businesses prepare for and overcome future disaster events.

This position offers the opportunity to integrate and bring focus to disaster resilience by working with and across UC ANRs efforts to help communities prepare and recover from disasters such as fire, flooding, pest outbreaks, drought, and Covid-19. Education programs will have positive impacts on community resilience, disaster preparedness, response, and recovery, and economic resilience via business planning.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop and deliver relevant program content to have meaningful impacts in local communities and throughout California.

Counties of Responsibility.  This position will be headquartered in Plumas County and also serve Lassen and Sierra Counties.  

Required Qualifications

Education: A minimum of a Master’s degree in community development, land use planning, emergency or risk management, or related field is required at the time of appointment. 

Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver license.
  • Solid understanding of practical information technology application and needs in communities.
  • Expectation to be available to work onsite on any day.

Desired Experience

  • Experience in rural communities and natural resource-based economies.
  • Passion and desire to pursue a career in Cooperative Extension and community development
  • Experience in building partnerships and with multidisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, manage teams and implement an applied research and outreach program, including setting measurable goals and objectives

The candidate should have a deep understanding of community and economic development and be able to design and implement a program that leads to positive changes and impact within the community and beyond. There is an expectation that advisors evolve and grow across their career and respond to changes in communities and clientele needs. 


Demonstrated excellence in written, oral and interpersonal and information technology communication skills.  Public speaking to stakeholders is a routine part of this position. 

Demonstrated ability to share complex information in a manner tailored to the audience.

Collaboration, Teamwork and Flexibility

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a team member with industry and other stakeholders.  Able to adapt as circumstances warranted.
