Project Scientist – Sierra Foothill REC AP#17-29

POSITION PURPOSE: The Project Scientist will work closely with project directors at UC Sierra Foothill Research and Extension Center (SFREC) and Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center (EOARC) to lead a multi-state research project investigating biotic and abiotic drivers of native grass recruitment on degraded intermountain rangeland and identifying potential management actions that can be used to improve large-scale restoration efforts. The Project Scientist is expected to work on all phases of research with both project directors with the bulk of field work and project development being run out of EOARC as this location is in close proximity to the Oregon and California intermountain field sites. As such the project scientist will maintain daily contact with the EOARC project director (Roger Sheley) as well as other potential EAORC field support staff that may be used in project implementation.
ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS: All UC ANR Project (e.g. Scientist) series titles are expected to make significant and creative contributions to a research or creative program or project in their academic discipline. Appointees are also responsible for performance in areas of professional competence and activity.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Major duties include designing and implementing field research examining seed and seedling ecology of native grasses and identifying how to translate this new ecological understanding to improve restoration and management of intermountain rangeland. Specific responsibilities include:
• Conduct field research and synthesis studies that address key restoration issues on intermountain rangeland.
• Analyze data and publish manuscripts in peer reviewed journals as well as in non-technical formats.
• Present research at professional society meetings.
• Coordinate outreach and extension around research in cooperation with project directors.
• Collaborate with federal and state governmental agencies by providing science based information around intermountain restoration.
• Serve the public by participating in activities of public agencies or professional societies that address key public needs.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: An earned Ph.D. in plant ecology, range ecology, or closely related field is required at the time of appointment. Strong statistical and quantitative skills and experience applying theses skills to diverse types of ecological data sets are required. Experience managing field research and leading field crews in research implementation are required. Ability to lead field work under remote field conditions is required. Experience publishing peer-reviewed research in high impact journals is required. Skills to communicate and extend technical information to diverse audiences are required. Experience with proposal development and familiarity with project planning and assessment tools and strategies are desirable.

The Assistant Project Scientist position is a non-career track position. The position is a one-year renewable term appointment (up to three years total) with a merit cycle every two years. The performance in the position will be evaluated annually. The position will be extended based on performance and availability of funding.
