2016 National 4-H Shooting Sports Youth Leadership Institute
The 2016 National 4-H Shooting Sports Youth Leadership Institute will be held August 2 – 6, 2016 at the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota. The conference is open to 4-H members who are enrolled in at least one of the six 4-H shooting sport project disciplines. Applicants must be at least 15 years of age by January 1, 2016 to apply. It is recommended that the candidates also have at least one year left in 4-H. All lodging (including linens), meals, transportation during the event and materials will be provided by generous donations from the National 4-H Shooting Sports Steering Committee General Fund. The cost and arrangement of transportation to the event will be the responsibility of the participant.
The purpose of this conference is strictly leadership development; there is no shooting involved. Participants will receive hands-on experiences in team building, communication, etiquette, and other important topics. At the conclusion of the event, teens are expected to return to their home state and support and promote their county and state 4-H programs through active leadership roles. If you have a 4-H member in your county that is qualified or interested, please contact your county 4-H staff person at your local UC Extension Office. The applications are due May 15th. The applications will be reviewed by a panel from the State Shooting Sports Committee and the successful candidate selected and notified. Each state program is guaranteed one slot at the conference.
This program is for youth who have exhibited exemplary leadership skills and maturity in the county program. The 4-H staff in your county should personally know these youth and be familiar with their character and abilities. This is someone who will represent the California State 4-H program among outstanding teens from across the country. In short, we need first rate 4-H members who happen to shoot, not first rate shooters who happened to be 4-H members.
Subject: SAVE THE DATE! 4-H Archery, Air Rifle, BB Gun & Shotgun Invitational at Buckmasters Expo, Montgomery AL - August 19-21, 2016
TO: State 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinators
Please share the attached SAVE THE DATE flyer with your 4-H shooting sports contacts. Alabama 4-H is delighted to host a 4-H Archery, Air Rifle, BB Gun and Shotgun Invitational Tournament August 19-21 in Montgomery. We would love for as many states as possible to come to "the Heart of Dixie" for fellowship and fun!
This youth shooting sports event will be held at the same time as America's largest hunting expo -- the Buckmasters Expo and Top Bow Championshiphttps://www.buckmasters.com/resources/expo . Not only is the Expo full of entertaining and educational offerings (and did I mention shopping), Montgomery is a wonderful family destination. I am happy to assist any state delegation who may wish to come with lodging and fun things to do (riverboat rides, Biscuits Baseball game tickets, concerts, etc.)!
Contact me at email@example.com or 334-750-4591 for more information or assistance. On April 1, we hope to have the Tournament Rules Packet at www.alabama4h.com and Registration open via 4-H Online https://al.4honline.com (youth obviously do not have to be an Alabama 4-H member to register). We are limiting participation to the first 500 participants, so State Coordinators might want to notify their audiences that registration is first-come, first-served.
Things to note:
• The CMP Headquarters will be running our Air Rifle and BB Gun matches, and these will be for CMP points -- there will be an Adult as well as a Youth class in these matches.
• The Archery Tournament is for youth only. Youth may select either the Hunting Bow or Genesis Class. The top Junior and Senior division youth from the top two states in Hunting Bow Class will be invited back on Sunday for a televised shoot-offer the Buckmasters Top Bow World Championship.
• Shotgun Tournament is Sporting Clays for youth only.
Attached please find the flyer, and also a link: http://www.aces.edu/4-H-youth/AL4-H/carousel/documents/4HYD-2082-UPDATE.pdf
We do not wish for this event to conflict in any way with your State's interest in and support of the National 4-H Shooting Sports Championships in Grand Island, NE. It is our intention that this event will be an expansion of opportunities for your 4-H youth who are too young or did not qualify for Nationals, but desire to participate in a PYD-focused shooting sports competition in another state.
I hope you will post this invitation to your 4-H social media, as well as send it out to all your 4-H Coaches and county Extension field staff. Thanks so much in advance for your help in promoting this fun 4-H and family event.
Sincerest Appreciation, Shannon
